PALS in
Business©
is an award winning business success programme designed to help you find the
real answers to real business issues.
A rapidly changing
environment and unpredictable global challenges requires your
organisation and people to both act and learn at the same time!
You know you need to
drain the swamp (that is, develop your knowledge and abilities to
survive and prosper as a business in 21st Century), but you are so busy
fighting alligators (handling the day-to-day crises) that you never get
time to do the draining!
PALS in
Business©
is all about you and a group of peers using the power of action learning
to solve your business problems and to
learn while you do so.
If
you have any questions or want to book your place,
then call us on +44 (0) 1252
710 333 NOW!
Alternatively, send an email to me at
mark@avnpicktree.com and tell
me about your business challenges and opportunities.
The programme is based on our
experience of working with small and medium sized businesses and
programmes we have delivered on behalf of
Skills for Business Network and Business Link Berkshire.
Participating delegates have achieved truly astonishing and profound
results and have been helped to grow and develop personally
and professionally; giving them a better business, a better life.
Evaluated
independently by Henley Management College to assess both organisation
results and individual development,
PALS in Business© conforms to the “Best Practices”
framework.

"The overall results were very
positive and showed that this type of development
opportunity was highly valued by the small business
owner managers involved. By the end of the
programmes real, immediate business benefits were
reported. Significant leadership skills development were
also seen in many cases."
David Black

Management & Leadership Programme

And the results are
absolutely guaranteed!
(Yes, I just said "guaranteed."
More on that later and don't forget to read about the
fantastic
bonuses on offer worth at least £457 including classic business books,
reports and great software to
market and grow your business. Also, an opportunity to make the most of
your leadership style and strengths through assessment and coaching.)
But don't take our word for it! Here's what
one
participants said about the programme:
|
"I was appointed MD two months
before the programme and wanted help to gain the confidence to change
the company. This programme has really been invaluable. I have now
increased the level of promotional and PR activities – we produce
newsletters and ask for referrals. I now give staff briefings to keep
them all informed and we are starting to document our procedures. I am
now working on a culture change to create a more open style of
management and increased staff empowerment. I have found the group
feedback sessions really useful in helping me to develop my ideas. Thank
you!"

And more recently, PALS in
Business©
has been recognised for the results it has helped business-owners
achieve both personally and professionally. In May 2007, it picked
up a prestigious award at a glitzy ceremony in London as an innovative
way of helping business people solve problems and learn in the process.
See our News section for more details!
A definition of
insanity is doing the same thing you have always done while
expecting a different result. Is this the case with you and your
business?
Can you really
afford to miss out on this unique opportunity?

"The
principal benefit of the programme to the business has been to enable me
to focus and establish a personal plan to introduce and initiate changes
leading to a mutually acceptable exit from the business on my
retirement. Prior to the programme I was having difficulty resolving
many of the potential and real problems. By documenting a personal plan
and building the company future around this, it has helped me to develop
a personal and company vision for the future. This led to developing the
management team and ongoing delegation of various tasks. The real
benefit of the programme was the strength of the team formed with the
other participants and the flexible approach to the delivery. This
programme has probably saved my company from potential oblivion on my
retirement."

The
Challenge
Businesses like yours,
like mine face enormous challenges in 21st Century, namely:
-
Rising complexity
of organisational problems such as rapid globalisation, competition,
rapid technological change, talent war etc.;
-
Need to develop new
leadership skills;
-
Increased importance
of effective, high performance teams;
-
The drive to
capture and transfer valued knowledge;
-
A greater need for
learning but less time for it.
Businesses and business
leaders need help to solve problems and challenges with truly innovative
and sustaining strategies; develop teams that continually improves their
capacity to perform and adapt; and capture, transfer and apply valuable
knowledge at the individual, group, organisation and community levels.
Typically, business
people prefer to listen and learn from other business leaders and peers
whom they admire and respect. They also believe that valuable
knowledge and skills are gained from acquiring relevant experience
solving real problems in the real world rather than from formal
qualifications or the theoretical models of the academic world.
Most are more interested
in how to apply leadership and business skills in a practical way so as
to achieve beneficial change quickly.
In other words, they
learn through doing in a process known as
action learning.
|
“I first worked with Mark on
an Action Learning training course which he facilitated
for a group of fellow CEO’s and Managing Directors.
Mark’s approach, methodology and insight added instant
value to the group taking us places that we otherwise
would have taken a very long time to reach. Following
that time we have worked together on further business
development courses and I have also brought Mark in to
facilitate some strategic thinking sessions and board
meetings at ramsac. I highly recommend both Mark and his
results.”

History
of Action Learning
Action learning
involves a group of peers working on real problems and learning
while they do so.
Action learning has
emerged as an effective tool used by organisations to
solve critical and complex
problems. Many companies use it to develop leaders,
build teams, and improve corporate capabilities. Action Learning has
been successful used to create new products and services, reduce costs
by improving production and delivery operations, expand customer bases,
improve service quality, and change organisational cultures.
Reg Revans introduced
action learning in the 1940s. Since then there have there have been
multiple variations of the concept. It is based on the premise
that:
"There can be no learning
without action and no (sober and deliberate) action without learning."
Revans suggests that businesses and
people cannot flourish unless the rate of learning is greater than that
of the rate of change being experienced.
Learning has two elements -
programmed knowledge (traditional instruction) and questioning
insight (critical insight).
Most forms of action learning share
the elements of real people resolving and taking action on real problems
in real time and learning while doing so. The great attraction of
action learning is its unique power to simultaneously solve difficult
challenges and develop people and organisations at
minimal costs to the business.
|
“I first met Mark when he
was facilitating a peer working group that I belonged
to. I found him to be a very dynamic presenter putting
across his wealth of knowledge in a very engaging way.
On the back of this I asked Mark to run a session to all
the employees at the AppSwing company meeting entitled
"Jump start your business brain". This was very
successful in opening up everyone to different ways of
thinking about the business. Whenever I meet with Mark I
find him to be personable, motivational and thought
provoking. He is highly recommended.”

What is
PALS in Business©?
PALS stands for
Power of Action Learning Sets.
PALS in
Business©
is a remarkably simple programme of peer-to-peer action learning that
helps business solve problems in the real world and to learn while they
do so. Based on "best practice", PALS in
Business©
has SIX key components:
-
A qualified problem
(project, challenge, opportunity, issue, or task) that is urgent and
important to the individual or business;
-
A group of peers
or a team ideally composed of four to eight individuals;
-
A process of
insightful questioning and reflective listening;
-
Action taken on
the problem;
-
A commitment to
learning;
-
A coach.
PALS in
Business©
is:
-
An opportunity to
step back and reflect on personal and professional needs with
valuable input on specific problems coming from other group members;
-
A powerful and
effective way for people to learn from one another and to develop
personally and professionally;
-
A process where you
support other group members and learn with and through one other;
-
A way of learning
from, and being supported by, a skilled coach;
-
The chance to work
on real problems in the real world and build individual, team
and organisational capabilities simultaneously all at minimal cost
to the business.
Participants in PALS in
Business© programmes are expected to raise and tackle
difficult questions, discuss sensitive and sometimes controversial
issues, and share their learning in a supportive environment.
Confidence and trust are
critical to the programme. Time is spent building a strong rapport and
bonding between group members and there is an unwritten understanding
that “what is said in the room stays in the room”.
PALS in
Business©
programmes may be run with peers from an organisation or a mixed set
where you can work with peers from different sectors and different
professional backgrounds.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
One of the questions we're asked most
frequently is if this programme is suitable for small and larger
businesses. There may be self employed individuals and one person
businesses on the programme - as well as leaders of large organisations. The power of effective
action learning is that the principles work for all
types - and sizes of business.

How
does it Work?
Once you have decided to
join, your requirements will be assessed and you’ll be placed with an
appropriate PALS in
Business© Programme. This could be
with an existing group or a new group and will be given support to help
you integrate into the group.
You’ll meet with a group
of peers for six sessions over a six to nine month period
- roughly every six weeks
(to accommodate business peaks and holiday periods). Each session
will usually last at least half of one day.
Typically, the group
will meet at a bespoke location that is geographically convenient to
most group members. The venue will be a dedicated training environment
with an atmosphere that is conducive to learning and enables you to take
a step back from the business and focus on developing personally and
professionally.
An example of
such a venue is
Barnett Hill in Wonersh, nr Guildford part of the award winning Sundial Group
of quality venues.

Group members will
come from a variety of professional backgrounds and work in different
sectors. What you have in common is a problem to be solved and the need
for structured time to reflect and to share learning.
The following system drives PALS in
Business©:
-
The group comes
together, re-integrates and members report briefly on what has been
happening;
-
Group sets the agenda
and negotiates
the time assigned to each member (which may vary depending on
need and urgency);
-
Members
take it in
turns to present their problem to the group;
Through reflective inquiry and dialogue, the group helps each presenter come
to a greater understanding of their situation so that they
can reframe the problem, determine goals and develop action strategies going forward.
The presenter is required
to:
-
Take action
between sessions;
-
At future meetings
report on the action taken and the results achieved.
Group members ask
questions in preference to making statements and must refrain from
giving advice, telling anecdotes, making judgement, or comparisons to
their own situation.
At each session, part of the time
may be given over to training the group in some aspect of management or
leadership.
At the end of each session
the group reflects on the process and gives feedback to each
other on what has taken place.
|
“Mark is an excellent
facilitator who encourages innovative thinking and
stimulates discussion that has added real value in my
approach to working in and on my business. I would
highly recommend the Action Learning programme for other
business owners and managers."
Joanna Read
Director at Morpheus Ltd |
|
The
Coach
Coaching is necessary for
the group to focus on the important (i.e., the learning
discovery, development and personal growth) as
well as the urgent (i.e., resolving the problem). The coach helps
the team members reflect on both what they are learning and how they are
solving problems.
Through a series of
questions, the coach enables group members to reflect on how they
listen, how they may have reframed the problem, how they give each other
feedback, how they are planning and working, and what assumptions may be
shaping their beliefs and actions.
The learning coach also
helps the team focus on what they are achieving, what they are finding
difficult, what processes they are employing, and the implications of
these processes.
The coaches for PALS in
Business©
will be Mark P. Russell and Rick Peet. Both have participated in
and coached Action Learning Sets and have wide-ranging experience of
working in many different types of businesses and industry sectors.

Testimonials
Other comments from participants
on previous programmes include:
|
“It made me feel positive about achieving
my goals.”
“It opened my mind but
also gave me the required focus to take action.”
“It made me think about
what I want from my business and to go and get it.”
“Thanks very much for
all your help, support and guidance. It has been a fun learning
experience, very interesting and informative and has changed the way I
think about my business.”
“A year ago I took over
the business as MD. The organisation was losing clients and money and
on the verge of folding. After a lot of hard work by the team, sales
are healthy and profit levels strong and the pipeline of new business is
robust. Challenges still remain but I am confident about the future of
the business. Key lessons that I internalised during the programme
were:
“The programme taught me the importance of
listening with empathy: to our customers, our staff, our consultants
and such like. It also dawned on me that there is no “silver bullet”
solution and that improvements must be continuous and never-ending. I
never realised how important marketing is to the success of any business
and I learnt that results can be achieved if you involve and empower
everyone in the organisation. On a personal note, I believe that it is
OK to think of what I want out of the business and to use this as a
starting point.” |

A treasure chest of business books, Summaries, audio CDs and DVDs,
including
Michael Gerber's best seller The E-Myth Revisited. This is required reading for anyone thinking about starting a business or
for those who have already taken that fateful step. The title refers to
the author's belief that entrepreneurs - typically brimming with good
but distracting ideas - make poor businesspeople. He establishes an
incredibly organised plan, so that daily details are scripted, freeing
the entrepreneur's mind to build the long-term success or failure of the
business. You don't need an MBA to understand or follow its directives;
Gerber takes time to explain buzzwords and complex theories. Written in
a clear and well-paced manner, The E-Myth Revisited is like
receiving advice from an old friend.
These fantastic

Your Frequently
Asked Questions
What is Action learning? Action
learning
involves a group of peers working
on real problems and learning while they do so. Introduced by Reg
Revans in 1940s, it is based on the premise that:
"There can be no learning without
action and no (sober and deliberate) action without learning."
Action learning is an effective tool to
solve critical and complex
problems. Many companies use it to develop leaders, build
teams, and improve corporate capabilities. Action Learning has been
successful used to create new products and services, reduce costs by
improving production and delivery operations, expand customer bases,
improve service quality, and change organisational cultures.
How
does the programme work?
You meet with a group of peers for on a regular basis and use
insightful questioning and reflective listening to help one
another resolve and take action on real problems in real time and learn
while doing so.
How
does the Guarantee Work?
It
is important that it effectively costs you nothing to join
PALS in
Business© - if at the end of this programme, you or your business
has not benefited from participation in PALS for Business, I will
personally refund your investment. That's how convinced I am that this
programme will impact your business beyond what you may believe
possible. We only want to have clients who are delighted with our
services and who will be comfortable recommending us to others
Does the size or type of my Business matter?
No. This leading edge programme is for
all types of business and we will have everyone from self employed
individuals and new business start ups, to managers of larger businesses
on the programme.
What if I am away for one of the workshops?
Your group of peers negotiates together to meet for six sessions
over a six to nine month period. This maximum period of nine
months to complete the programme is designed to accommodate most
business peaks and holiday periods.
Can
my colleagues join me in the sessions?
No. Confidence and trust are critical
to the programme. Time is spent building a strong rapport and bonding
between group members and there is an unwritten understanding that “what
is said in the room stays in the room”. This relationship might not be
easily maintained if there are one-off visitors and guests of members
attending sessions.
What happens at the end of the programme?
It really depends on the wishes of the group. One of the objectives is
to transfer to the group the action learning facilitation skills. That
way the group can choose to disband at the end of the programme or,
alternatively meet up on a regular basis to run sessions that they
facilitate themselves.
Where does the group meet?
Typically, the group will meet at a bespoke location that is
geographically convenient to most group members. The venue will be a
dedicated training environment with an atmosphere that is conducive to
learning and enables you to take a step back from the business and focus
on developing personally and professionally.
An example of
such a venue is
Barnett Hill, part of the award winning Sundial Group.

real answers to real business issues

The
theme is
Metaphors: Powerful ways to tell a story.
Use of metaphor
has been described as a highly expedient way of reaching conscious
and subconscious learning states instantaneously. How true is
this statement in your experience?
How
valuable is the use of metaphor in the action learning context?
For the introductory exercise please bring with you something that
represents how you feel about action learning - it could be an
image, an object, a performance, a sound.
The session
will be facilitated by ALF members John Heywood and Mark Russell
The International Foundation for Action Learning
Workshop will be hosting another workshop on
The Secret Life of
Groups
on
Tuesday 7th July
2009.
Action learning
Sets are groups, and group dynamics lend extraordinary power to the
action learning process. Very little is written, however, in the
action learning literature about how group theory can help the Set
conductor/facilitator to understand and develop the work of the
Set.
The seminar
introduces some key elements of group theory and invites a strictly
limited number of participants to apply them to their own
experiences in action learning Sets and other groups. After an
introduction to the theory, learning will be largely interactive,
including discussion, opportunities for reflection and a ‘fishbowl’
practice and observation exercise.
The workshop is
suitable for those who are familiar with Action Learning and who
have some experience of facilitating Sets.
The event
runs from 11.15am till 3.30pm and will be held at The Directory of
Social Change, 24 Stephenson's Way
London NW1 2DP.
This is a great opportunity for you
to discuss approaches, current issues and solutions related to
Action Learning and to network with leaders in the field.

May 2007 - PALS in
Business©
picks up a Gong!
AVN Picktree have been chosen by their peers as
Accounting Firm Of the Year 2007 for their
PALS in
Business©
Leadership Development Programme - an innovative way of helping
business people solve problems and learn in the process.
AVN Picktree's Mark Russell and Rick Peet
picked up the Award on 3rd May 2007 at a glitzy ceremony in the City
of London attended by over 300 fellow accountants from across the UK
and Ireland.
The prestigious Award, sponsored by AVN The
Accountants, is the only one of its kind where the winners are
actually chosen by a panel of fellow accountants.
At the presentation AVN's Chairman Steve Pipe
said:
"Competition was very tough, but even so AVN
Picktree were clear winners for their PALS in Business action
learning programme. They are redefining what businesses should
expect from their accountants, and blazing a trail for others to
follow. It's so good to see how they are helping their clients to
grow, helping them to innovate and helping them to become more
successful. AVN Picktree is an extraordinary firm, and fully
deserves the recognition given to them by their peers."
